This old guy’s made quite a few zines in his time!

I started making comics with a friend in 2006 and carried on making booklets of my comics/drawings/writing for the next ten years or so. I mostly sold them walking up to strangers at arts festivals and having stands at all sorts of markets.

I even ran a project called the Cape Town Zine Project in 2012, where I did some pretty serious zine-making facilitation.

I was first asked to animate a music video by Cape Town’s John Wizards. That was in 2013 for their Lusaka by Night single. Then about a year later they asked me to make another for their Muizenberg single. The Muizenberg video was particularly well-received, which meant I could work on some animated videos for a while after that. I loved doing it, but it was pretty stressful to be honest 😬. I didn’t actually know how to animate, which is probably why my videos are so experimental.

Talking about experimental, the video that I made with critically-acclaimed film director Jenna Bass and Lavender Hill rap crew DOODVENOOTSKAP for their ‘Protein Shake’, is possibly one of the coolest things I have ever done. It’s pretty busy.

I’ve collaborated with two printmakers/studios,
Edition Verso and Olwandle Studio, both in Johannesburg.

I’ve worked with Edition Verso’s Sara-Aimee Verity on three occasions, starting in 2017. We’ve made prints using a variety of methods - monotypes, etchings, linocut and chine collé. The images below are from these collaborations. I have a strong bond with Sara-Aimee and hope to contune making prints with her well into the future.

I also made some really beautiful screenprints with Amaya Delmas in 2019. I dare say that these screenprints are quintessentially me. Thanks Amaya!

Also, bonus feature! I loved these screenprints so much that I took the ‘off-cuts’, by which I just mean the prints that wouldn’t be part of the edition because they had errors, and cut them up and drew on them. I really like them. You can see some of the results in the 2020-2022 drawings.
